ECU reprogramming

The ECU is the unit that controls the engine through software. With Alientech KESS3 equipment, that software is read, backed up and adjusted, always keeping a copy of the original file.

ECU reprogramming

Technical guide

What it is and how it works

What an ECU is

The ECU (Engine Control Unit) is the computer that governs the engine. It receives signals from dozens of sensors and decides, among other things, how much fuel to inject, at what moment, at what rail pressure and at what turbo pressure. Those decisions come from software with calibration maps defined by the manufacturer.

What reprogramming involves

With read and write equipment, the ECU software can be extracted, backed up and its parameters modified. This is done to correct software faults, clone a damaged unit, adapt the engine after replacing parts or adjust its calibration.

The first step is always to save a copy of the original file, so the vehicle can return to its factory state if necessary.

Technical and legal considerations

A poorly done modification can increase engine wear, exhaust gas temperature or smoke. Adjustments must respect the mechanical limits of the engine and the emissions rules of the country.

That is why, besides the tool, correct ECU identification, verification of live data after the adjustment and a review of the mechanical condition of the engine all matter.

Symptoms

Signs that the part may be failing

  • Need to clone or repair an ECU
  • Software fault after replacing parts
  • Adjustment of engine parameters

Diagnosis

Common symptoms and their probable cause

SymptomProbable cause
Vehicle does not start after replacing a partThe part requires coding or synchronization with the ECU.
Intermittent fault or persistent codeCorrupt software or parameters out of range.
ECU damaged by an electrical surgeCorrupt memory that can be recovered or cloned.

This table is a guide. The real cause is confirmed with the part on the test bench.

At the laboratory

What is measured

  • ECU identification and version
  • Integrity of the file read
  • Live engine data after adjustment

Scope

What is serviced

  • Reading and backup of the original file
  • Parameter adjustment
  • Alientech KESS3 equipment
  • Diagnostics with Launch scanner
  • Alientech KESS3 equipment
  • Launch scanner
  • Bosch and other ECUs

Process

How the work is done

01

Identification

The ECU and the vehicle are identified.

02

Backup

The original file is saved before any change.

03

Adjustment

The required parameters are modified.

04

Verification

The vehicle is tested and the result reviewed.

Is the part in another city in Colombia? It can be sent by courier. When writing on WhatsApp, packing and shipping instructions are provided.

Frequently asked questions

What is ECU reprogramming?+

It means reading the software of the engine control unit, modifying parameters such as fuel delivery, timing or pressure, and writing the file back. It should always be done with a copy of the original file.

Is the original file saved?+

Yes. A complete backup of the original file is made before anything is modified.

Are there legal limits?+

Adjustments must comply with the emissions regulations that apply in each country. It is advisable to check the rules of the place where the vehicle is driven.
